It has been more than two months since former Jamia Millia Islamia vice-chancellor Najeeb Jung left the campus for Raj Nivas after his appointment as Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi. A search committee has not yet been officially announced to look into names for the appointment of the next V-C,even as the university continues to function under officiating vice-chancellor S M Sajid.

Jamia’s Executive Council has named Justice Aftab Alam and vice-chancellor of Jamia Hamdard professor G N Qazi as their nominees to the three-member committee. The third member of the search committee is nominated by the visitor of the university, who,in this case,is the President of India. Since the third member has not been named by the President, the committee has not been formed.

Among the frontrunners for the vice-chancellor’s position are professor Zoya Hassan, professor at the School of Social Science,Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Seyed E Hasnain, the former vice-chancellor of the University of Hyderabad and is now a professor of Biological Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology.

Zoya Hassan is a former member of the National Commission for Minorities. She has also worked on issues related to ethnicity, gender and politics. She is the wife of historian Mushirul Hasan who was Jamia’s V-C prior to Jung.

Professor Hasnain, the first director of Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD),told Newsline that he had heard his name was doing the rounds for the post of Jamia vice-chancellor and declined the position although he has received no official communication on the matter.

“I have already told professor Qazi that I have no interest in taking up the position and have also recommended two more names to him. I have done as much as I could as vice-chancellor at the University of Hyderabad,” he said.
