Crime Branch on Tuesday arrested two persons on the charge of cheating a man of lakhs of rupees by promising him a prominent position in the Congress and a role in ticket distribution during Assembly polls in Himachal Pradesh.
They even gave him a fake appointment letter in this regard.
Police identified the two men as Vikrant Poddar (29),an LIC agent who is a graduate, and his associate Pramod Kumar Jain (50) a businessman. The duo cheated an astrologer,Hari Dev Dwivedi of over Rs 7 lakh, police said.
Dwivedi knew Poddar since 2006 after the latter started giving tuitions to Dwivedis two sons.
Early last year,Poddar told Dwivedi that he knew several senior politicians and told him that he could help Dwivedi become a senior functionary in the Congress. He also told him that once appointed,Dwivedi would be able to play an important role in distributing tickets for the Assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav said.
Poddar then introduced Dwivedi to Jain, who claimed to be a member of Telephone Advisory Committee. According to police, the duo told Dwivedi that they would get him appointed as party in-charge of Himachal Pradesh and asked him to pay Rs 7 lakh as contribution to the party fund.
They gave Dwivedi an appointment letter on the letterhead of All India Rajeev Gandhi Vichar Manch as National Secretary and Himachal Pardesh in-charge,undersigned by one Pramod Tyagi, the national chairman, Yadav said.
The fraud, however, came to the fore after Dwivedi made enquiries at the Congress headquarters. There,he reportedly came to know that no such organisation was either affiliated or associated with Congress.
He also found that Poddar could not be found at the address he had given Dwivedi. We apprehended Poddar while he was preparing to flee Delhi. Jain was apprehended from Shahdara, Yadav said.
