A 11-year-old boy and his uncle drowned in the Agra Canal in Southeast Delhi’s Badarpur area on New Year’s Eve, officials said Monday. The Delhi Police said multiple teams of divers and NDRF have been deployed to search for the bodies.

According to the police, the incident took place around 4 pm. The boy, Yash Kumar (11), was playing alone near the canal when he slipped and fell into the water. He couldn’t swim and allegedly drowned. He was spotted by his uncle, Sachin, who was working nearby. Police said he rushed to help Yash but could not find anyone nearby. Yash was a student of Class 3 at Nahar Nigam Bal Vidyalaya in Jaitpur.

“The man jumped into the canal to rescue his nephew but he also drowned. The family lives in Jaitpur village area and his wife Manisha made a call informing about the incident. She said Yash’s younger brother, Adarsh (10) called her and told her how his brother and uncle drowned in the canal. We found Adarsh was a witness. There’s no foul play,” said DCP Rajesh Deo.

Soon, police called for rescue teams including fire brigade, ambulance, NDRF (East) with five divers/lifeguards, and a boat. “Every possible endeavour was made to rescue both persons, but the bodies could not be traced till late Sunday and the search operation was closed about 8 pm (due to darkness),” added Deo.

Police said operation was resumed Monday from 9.00 am onwards and a special team of 27 trained members were additionally deployed from NDRF, Dwarka with 3 more boats. One fire tender has also been arranged to help in the operation. However, the bodies haven’t been found yet.

Locals said the family has been living in Jaitpur and Badarpur area for over a decade. Sachin worked odd jobs to survive while Yash and Adarsh’s parents work at a cloth factory in the city.
