Two days after she had allegedly set herself afire for harassment by two boys from her neighbourhood in Naubasta police station area of Kanpur,Hemu Vishwakarma (17) died at the hospital on Monday afternoon.

Police arrested the two boys,Chhotu Vishwakarma and Rohit Vishwakarma, after lodging an FIR under various Sections of IPC,including 304,on the complaint of the girl’s father,Ramakant Vishwakarma. Hemu was a Class XI student at Rajmata Inter-College.

According to police, the harassment of the girl by two boys first came to light in July when Ramakant and two boys had a quarrel.

Sub-Inspector A K Pandey said the police had booked both in July after the quarrel but they were released on the bail the same day. After that police did not receive any complaints from the girl or her family members about stalking or harassment by the boys,he said. The arrested boys are also students,he added.

Police said the girl’s father complained that the boys used to harass her when she went to school or anywhere else in the city. This traumatised her and she set herself on fire at home on Saturday when she was alone,Ramakant said.

Kanpur SSP Amitabh Yash said the police received the information about the girl immolating herself on Saturday. She suffered more than 60 per cent burn injuries and was not able to speak till she died,he added.
