Police have launched a probe into the alleged rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl who was found dead in Worli Tuesday. Several suspects,some of them from the girls family and some of her neighbours,have been detained and were questioned till late evening on Tuesday.
Worli police said the girl stayed with her family on a pavement in the area.
The victim went to sleep at around midnight Monday but when the family woke up at 6:30 am,she was missing. They started a search and found her dead body around a 100 feet away from the house on the same road, said Additional Commissioner of Police (Central region) Praveen Salunke.
The family approached police. The body was taken to Poddar Hospital and later to Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central for postmortem. The police registered a complaint of murder against unidentified persons. However,Tuesday evening,the postmortem report said she had been raped and the charge was added to the complaint.
There are injuries to the girls private parts as well as marks all over the body indicative of a struggle and a sexual assault. Postmortem report indicates she was strangled to death, said an officer with the Worli police.
The police have registered a complaint for murder and rape under IPC as well as Aggravated Penetrative Sexual Assault under the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act,2012.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone III) Vinayak Deshmukh said,We have detained some male members of the family as well as a friend of the family who was staying with them for some days. A probe is on.
