The number of accused in the August 2012 Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terror conspiracy case spread across Hyderabad,Bangalore,Hubli and Nanded has gone up to 26,with the NIA arresting a man for allegedly helping accused number 21 — Imran Ahmed alias Immu Bhai who was caught in Bangalore on November 28 — procure a fake passport.

Sources said Abdullah alias Iqbal allegedly helped Imran Ahmed obtain a second passport on a Mysore address to travel to India in November after an alert was issued to impound the original.

“Imran Ahmed was in possession of two passports, which is violation of law. A second passport was issued on a Mysore address after Abdullah alias Iqbal provided forged documents,” they said.

Imran Ahmed,34,a dentist based in Saudi Arabia,is the brother-in-law of two Indian doctors accused in the 2007 Glasgow airport suicide bombing attempt. He was remanded in judicial custody on Saturday at the end of a week-long police custody.

During interrogation, the NIA tried to ascertain from Imran Ahmed if his cousin and brother-in-law Dr Sabeel Ahmed, who was exonerated in the Glasgow bombing case,is also known as “Motu Doctor”,the unidentified accused number 22 in the case. The sources said Imran Ahmed admitted knowing Sabeel but not as “Motu Doctor”.

The NIA has now sought custody of accused number seven,Mohammed Akram, who claimed to have met “Motu Doctor” and Imran Ahmed in Saudi Arabia in 2011 to hatch an alleged conspiracy to attack right-wing Hindu leaders and carry out other terrorist activities.

As per a chargesheet filed by the NIA in a Bangalore court,Imran Ahmed is an LeT operative who sheltered Akram,24,of Nanded when he traveled to Saudi Arabia in 2011 to meet a number of alleged LeT leaders of Indian origin to plan “jihadi activities” in India.

The NIA wants to confront Akram with the statements made by Imran Ahmed. In a bail plea filed on Saturday, lawyers argued that Imran Ahmed had been falsely implicated. Special NIA court judge Somaraju posted hearing on the plea to December 16.

The NIA has named Imran Ahmed an absconding accused with Mohammed Bhai alias Abdul Bari,Abdul Majeed — brother of Shahid Bilal — Siddique bin Osman alias Abu Hanzala,Farhatullah Ghori and Furkhan Bhai, all LeT-linked wanted terrorists from Hyderabad.

“Motu Doctor”,Dr Usman Ghane and engineer Mohammed Shahed Faisal alias Ustad, all hailing from Karnataka, have been named absconders in the alleged LeT conspiracy case.

The August 2012 plot for which Imran Ahmed was arrested involved alleged recruitment of radically inclined Muslim youths for terrorist activities. Two of the 12 arrested in the case allegedly traveled to Pakistan via Iran to fight in Afghanistan. Four of the 16 people originally arrested in the case, including journalist Muthi-ur-Rahman Siddiqui and DRDO scientist Aijaz Ahmed Mirza, were later set free after no evidence of their involvement in the alleged plot was found.
