Serial rapist and murderer Jai Shankar is the first person to scale the 30-ft high wall of the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison to freedom, but he is not the first to fox prison officials into escape.

On September 7,2009,Naga alias Nagaraja,40,an under-trial,slipped out with a film crew that had come to shoot a Kannada movie, titled,in an ironic twist,Parole. Naga, jailed in connection with a forest fire case, pretended to be part of the film crew and came out with them when the shooting ended. The prison officials did not notice his absence till the roll call that evening. Naga remains untraced to this day.

Puttaswamy alias Ikkala Rangaiah,44,of Kasturba Nagar on Mysore Road escaped on March 10,2011 while deputed for gardening. He had been arrested for a 2001 murder and convicted to life in jail. He was freed on parole thrice but had returned. Then he fell in love with a woman from Hassan and plotted his escape. His freedom, however, lasted only three days before the police found him in Hassan.

Several prisoners have also escaped when hospitalised outside the jail and while being transported to courts and back.
