Voters in Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency will decide the fate of 11 candidates, including five Independents, on Wednesday. The main contest, however, is between BJP’s Sawarn Singh Salaria, Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar and AAP’s Major General (retd) Suresh Khajuria. Kulwant Singh of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), which is led by Simranjit Singh Mann, is also in fray. Total 14,95,269 voters are registered for Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency. Out of them, 7,88,176 are male and 7,07,079 are female.
There are 1781 polling stations that have been established, with the maximum, 209, being in Dera Baba Nanak assembly constituency. EVM and VVPAT machines will be used simultaneously at all polling booths.
“We have received no complaint of violence during the election campaign. It remained peaceful. I request all political parties and candidates to maintain peace and harmony on voting day. We have deployed 10,000 Punjab Police and paramilitary forces’ personnel. Voting day will remain peaceful,” said Returning Officer and DC Gurdaspur, Gurlavleen Singh Sidhu.
