Death of 77-year-old: Mohali Healthcare firm fined Rs 10 lakh for negligence

Mohali Consumer Forum has imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on a healthcare company after the death of a 77-year-old man.

THE DISTRICT Consumer Forum has imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on a healthcare company after the death of a 77-year-old man. The family of the deceased alleged that the death was caused due to negligence on the part of the company’s staff. The company was told to pay compensation amount within 45 days of the issuance of the order.

Sector 71 resident Mahinderpal Sharma filed a case against Delhi-based Health Care at Home, which provides trained medical staff at homes for patient care. Sharma, in his complaint, alleged that his father died due to the carelessness of the staff provided by the company.

Sharma told the court that his father Satpal Sharma had respiratory problems and was admitted to a private hospital around two years ago. He had met some representatives of the company there. Sharma said he signed an agreement with the company after doctors advised him to take his father home.

Sharma added that after the agreement, the company sent a woman nurse to their home. One day, when Satpal Sharma had breathing problems, the nurse could not give proper Oxygen from the cylinder and in another instance the the staff allegedly put the catheter in a wrong manner, which caused complications.

Sharma said he took his father to Fortis Hospital where doctors told them that the catheter was not inserted properly. Sharma said his father died on September 18, 2014.
