The CBI Friday arrested Independent MLA Satish Sail, who was earlier with the Congress, for his role in the illegal export of iron ore from Bellikeri port in 2009-10.

Sail’s Mallikarjuna Shipping exported about 9 lakh tonne iron ore from the port from 2009 to 10,of which, the CBI has found, nearly 6.5 lakh tonne was sourced illegally.

Sail’s arrest comes a day after the CBI arrested his fellow Independent legislator T H Suresh Babu, formerly with the BJP,in the same case. Babu has since been remanded in CBI custody till September 27.

The CBI took over probe into the Bellikeri export scam after the Supreme Court directed it on September 7,2012 “to investigate the cases relating to illegal extraction of about 50.79 lakh MT iron ore from forest areas of Karnataka between January 1,2009 and May 31, 2010, the illegal transport of the aforesaid quantity of iron ore to Bellikeri port and its illegal export to other countries.”

The illegal iron ore trade in Karnataka was uncovered by the Lokayukta in March 2010 when it found that 8 lakh tonne ore had been transported from Bellary to Bellikeri port without valid mining or transport permits.
