A security guard at an IDBI Bank ATM in Mahadevapura on Outer Ring Road was stabbed to death by two robbers Monday early morning. The accused were arrested within hours of the crime.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) P S Harsha said guard Harishankar Sharma (25) of Mahadevapura was a native of Uttar Pradesh. Chintu Devanath (20) and Nabokar (19) of Assam barged in at around 3 am and tried to break open the ATM. Sharma, who had been employed to guard the machine only a fortnight ago,was stabbed when he resisted. The accused also hit him on the head with a sharp weapon.
Just when they were trying to break open the cash box after grievously injuring Sharma,a Mahadevapura police patrol team comprising Chikkanarasimhaiah and Manjunatha Swamy spotted Devanath and Nabokar and tried to corner them. The robbers, however, escaped.
The police then rushed Sharma to hospital but he was declared brought dead. Returning to the crime scene, they found a wallet of an accused and arrested both.
The police said the two earned a living in Bangalore by tending to pet dogs in apartment blocks.
The swift police action was due to timely information received from the control room, which was alerted by Whitefield Police around 2 am about a robbery attempt at an ICICI Bank ATM in Ramagondanahalli. The control room relayed a message on the wireless that patrol teams should check all ATMs in their jurisdiction.
