A one-day workshop titled Ensuring Child Survival and Development by Enhancing Optimal Infant and Young Child Feeding was held on Monday at the State Institute of Health and Family Welfare,Punjab at Mohali.
The workshop was jointly organised by the Department of Health and Family Welfare,Punjab,Department of Women and Child Development and Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India.
The workshop was inaugurated by Vini Mahajan,Principal Secretary,Health and Family Welfare and Medical Education and Research,Punjab.
Mahajan,in her keynote address,emphasised on the importance of breastfeeding and promised to take action to increase breastfeeding rates in Punjab during the 12th five year plan. She stressed upon the promotion of the practice of exclusive breastfeeding to achieve the desired breastfeeding rate in Punjab.
The Infant Milk Substitutes Feeding Bottles and Infant Foods (Regulation of Production Supply and Distribution) Act 1992 and Amendment Act 2003 bans all kinds of promotion of baby foods and feeding bottles anywhere.
The experts said that the Act should be effectively enforced in order to protect mothers from the baby-feeding industry.
