A Punjabi wedding would be incomplete without the customary bhangra and gidda rounds interspersed with boliyaan. The latter are folk songs of repartee, sung during festive occasions. With an aim of reviving boliyaan, radio station Big FM and TV channel Spark Punjabi are now inviting listeners with their out-of-the box (read whacky) versions of contemporary bolis as part of a hunt for Big Boli Star. The show, which will be hosted by Big FM RJ Dhanveer, will be judged by popular folk singers Gurmeet Bawa and Lachi Bawa. Speaking about this initiative,a Big FM spokesperson remarked,“Boliyaan have been passed down orally from generation to generation. We are taking steps to ensure that this traditional art continues to flourish, both in rural and urban areas of Punjab. Big Boli Star talent hunt is expected to create enthusiasm for traditional Punjabi culture as well as bring new talent to the forefront.” The auditions for the talent hunt will be announced soon and short-listed contestants will vie for the Big Boli Star title at a finale to be held in Chandigarh, which will be telecast on Spark Punjabi.
