Residents of Sector 25 protested outside the Sector 39 police station on Wednesday. They were demanding the release of a 34-year-old woman who, they claimed, had been arrested on false charges of theft.

Baby, who works as the domestic help in a Sector 37 house, had been accused of stealing gold jewellery from the house of her employers.

Speaking to Newsline,Mange Ram,husband of the woman, said the police had wrongly arrested his wife in a theft case. Baby had been working at the Sector 37 house for the past over one year. On Tuesday morning, she had gone to work at the house and after work had asked for an advance of Rs 200 which was given to her.

Ram alleged that later in the evening, four policemen came to her house and told her to accompany them to the police station for verification,as there had been a theft in the house where she worked. Later, she was arrested.

Denying the allegations that the woman had been arrested in a false case,Charanjit Singh,SHO of Sector 39 Police Station, said: “The house owner,T R Singla, had accused Baby of stealing 120 grams of gold ornaments. The accused was the only person present in the house apart from the family members.”
