A woman staff member of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) has complained of sexual harassment allegedly by a senior doctor of the institute.Acting on the complaint, the PGI has forwarded it to the institute’s sexual harassment committee, which has started investigating into the complaint.

Sources told The Chandigarh Newsline on Monday that a woman employee of the health institute filed a complaint recently alleging sexual harassment by a doctor working in the same department as hers at PGI.

“The committee is investigating it (the complaint) and the members have already conducted meetings on the issue,” a senior PGI official privy to the developments in the case said. “The victim has initially shared the harassment with other colleagues. She then submitted a written complaint to the head of department. Soon after the complaint was received by the head of department, he forwarded it to the sexual harassment committee.”

The official added that the investigation would “reveal further information about the entire case”.

“A proper investigation is being conducted and action would be taken if (the accused is) found guilty,” the official added.

The official said the accused doctor has already an inquiry going on against him in another case of financial irregularity at PGI. “We will ask the victim to appear before the committee. We would also ask some of her colleagues who are aware about the harassment to appear before the committee, too.”

Public relations officer, PGI, Manju Wadwalkar, however, said she is unaware about the case. “I don’t have any information about it,” she said.

When asked about the nature of complaint by the victim, the official said that the victim has alleged that the doctor “touched her” in the department.

This is not the first time the PGI has received a sexual harassment complaint. In 2012, the PGI had sacked an assistant professor after an inquiry committee found out the allegations of sexually harassing a woman colleague were true.
