In the wake of the recent cases of crime against women and children in Haryana,CPM Politburo member and MP Brinda Karat on Monday staged a protest in Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s home district of Rohtak. The police had to resort to lathicharge to control hundreds of protesters, largely women, leaving five persons — including three women — seriously injured.

This was the second major protest rally held by Karat and her supporters in Rohtak in the last few months. Earlier, she had staged a rally against the state government after the infamous Apna Ghar sex abuse scandal came to light.

On Monday, several women and social outfits came out on the streets in Rohtak and marched towards the office of the deputy commissioner. However, the police intercepted the protesters at Ambedkar chowk. When the protesters tried to cross over the police barricades, they were lathicharged.

However, the protesters refused to disperse and insisted on submitting a memorandum to the deputy commissioner,Sub-Divisional Magistrate Jagdish Sharma and Tehsildar Pramod Chahal reached the venue and accepted the memorandum that demanded security to all rape victims and stern punishment for the accused.

“It is shameful the way the government is functioning under Hooda. Be it Apna Ghar issue or the spate of rapes, the state government has badly failed on all aspects when it comes to ensuring the security of women,” Karat said.

She added: “While innocent women and minors are being raped daily, the government has deployed hundreds of policemen wearing bullet-proof jackets to stop a peaceful procession. Is this the way a state government functions? This is nothing but an attempt to suppress the voice of people… The police lathicharged people who were simply raising their voice against atrocities committed on women. Hooda needs to be taught ABC of the Constitution.”

Jagmati Sangwan,vice-president of the Akhil Bhartiya Janwadi Mahila Samiti, who had joined Karat, said: “The state government has failed to curb rapes. One after another, daily, women are being raped and the state government is busy indulging in scams.”

Karat also slammed Congress president Sonia Gandhi,Hooda and other Congress leaders for visiting the family of the Jind rape victim, who had committed suicide after she was raped by two persons. “The Haryana government can speak with the retrograde Khaps,Congress leaders can make shameful and shocking statements calling 90 per cent of the rapes consensual, but such leaders are yet to be shunted out. The chief minister’s visit along with Sonia Gandhi, was nothing but a blatant display of hypocrisy. Why was such a solidarity and sympathy was not shown by any of the leaders to any rape victim, till the Congress president reached Jind?” Karat asked.
