Verify facts before raising issues: Patil to SAD leaders

Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil on Tuesday reprimanded the leaders of the local unit of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and asked them to verify facts before presenting them to the Administration. The delegation was asked to convey to the people that the ‘three-language formula’,as followed in the country,will be in Chandigarh also,and any person wanting to use Punjabi will not face any difficulty in doing so.

The members of the SAD delegation met Patil to discuss several issues,including teaching Punjabi language in schools. They demanded that there should be facilities for students to learn Punjabi language and also learn other subjects in Punjabi.

The officers of Chandigarh Administration explained that students are allowed the facility of learning Punjabi and other subjects in Punjabi in all schools of Chandigarh. They were also assured that the facility would be provided if any school did not have it. In fact,it was noted that all the schools have this provision.

The delegation was told that the matter relating to Punjabi language is sometimes raised by persons who are not fully informed of the policy followed at national and state levels. They were told to be well informed and not create misunderstandings. The Administration officers further said that the matter relating to use of Punjabi in Chandigarh is being dealt with seriously and in detail because this issue is raised time and again by people who are not fully conversant in it.

The second matter which came up for discussion was about recruitment for the job of conductors. The members of the delegation were told that any candidate who is matriculate and is able to speak in the language used in the city and surrounding areas,will be eligible to apply. In case there is any legal difficulty in this aspect,it will be done away with.
