UT set to ban sale of tobacco products

After smoking,the UT Administration is set to ban sale of tobacco products,including gutkas,khainis and others containing nicotine,soon.

After smoking,the UT Administration is set to ban sale of tobacco products,including gutkas,khainis and others containing nicotine,soon.

As of now,there exists a ban on the sale of such tobacco products in Madhya Pradesh,Kerala and Bihar. Recently,the Himachal Pradesh government also enforced the ban but the orders were withdrawn later as the matter had reached the High Court.

Though there is already a provision of challaning on sale of such products under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India Regulation,which prohibits the addition of tobacco to food products,issued on August 1,2011. The complete ban on such products will help in reducing the consumption substantially. The officials in the UT Health Department have already collected the data regarding sale and availability of such products in the city.

A senior health official said any decision in this regard would be taken only after the data is available in this regard.
