Residents in the city have complained of frequent power cuts to the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam Ltd (UHBVNL) that is putting them through a lot of inconvenience. Residents said that they have to face unscheduled power cuts and this is happening even as the state claims that it has surplus power.

BJP elected member from ward no 9,C B Goel, said that the power cuts are despite the fact that the state claims that it is surplus in power. “In some of sectors in ward no 9,people are being subjected to 4-5 hour power cuts,” he said. Goel said that the power cuts are happening as the transmission and distribution system for the supply of electricity was in shambles.

“There is an immediate need for improving the power transmission system in the city. The transmission system has not been upgraded for a long time due to which people have to face the cuts,” he said. During the rains the power lines get snapped making the authorities impose the power cuts in the city. Goel said that during the rains the power supply remained snapped in some sectors for several hours.

Residents of Sector 7 said that they are facing frequent power cuts. President of Panchkula Estate Welfare Association,R C Chabra, said that the power cuts are common and each day the residents of Sector 7 are facing power cuts for 1-2 hours. He said that the residents earlier complained to the UHBVNL,but they were informed that the department has to resort to power cuts during overloading.

“The cuts that we are facing are unscheduled and during the summers when electricity is required the most,we are facing a number of inconveniences due to the power outages,” said Chabra. He added that earlier they took up the matter with the concerned authorities, but they were told that due to the utilisation of electricity more than that was supplied there remains a heavy load on the transmission system due to which the UHBVNL has to resort to the power cuts. “Most of the time the main supply line gets damaged and it take a lot of time for the repairs to complete in our sector due to which we are facing longer power cuts,” he said.

Goel said that transmission system in the city should be upgraded on priority to avoid inconvenience to the residents. He also emphasised that with the upgrading of the system, the government could check the transmission and distribution losses.
