The bandh in the state,in support of Balwant Singh Rajaona,on Wednesday has left one dead,more than two dozen injured while a dozen cases have been registered and a few hundred people have been arrested. There was further trouble on Thursday after Shiv Sena activists tried to burn an effigy of Balwant Singh Rajowal in Patiala,Phagwara,Amritsar,Gurdaspur and few other places.
18-year-old Jaspal Singh of Sidhwan Jamita village near Gurdaspur died after he was hit by a bullet when Punjab police personnel fired in the air to disperse two communal groups on Thursday. He is reportedly a student of Beant College in Gurdaspur. A curfew has been imposed in the town.
Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) SK Sharma said: Around a dozen cases have been registered across the state mostly for preventive arrests due to the bandh called by a few organizations.
Sources said the police have arrested around hundred people across the state including prominent leaders like Simranjit Singh Mann of the SAD (Amritsar), Daljit Singh,president SAD (P),Harpal Singh Cheema secretary general of SAD (P),Paramjit Saholi of SAD (Ind),Gurdip Gosha president Youth Wing SAD (Delhi),GS Dhanola former secretary general SAD (Amritsar),Baljit Singh Daduwal,chairman of the Panthic Sewa Lehar,Jawinder Singh Baliwal,president of the Punjab Unit of SAD (Delhi) and Gursewak Singh,general secretary of SAD (Amritsar). The sources added that state police conducted raids across the state till late on Wednesday night and arrested the protesters.
Meanwhile,the SAD (Amritsar) has slammed the Punjab government,accusing it of targeting its party leaders and workers for political reasons. Prof Moninderpal Singh General Secretary of SAD (Amritsar) said,Members of our party including our president Simranjit Singh Mann have been arrested and sent to prison. Preventive arrest as per our understanding is done before a event and not afterwards .
