An undertrial in a rape case escaped from police custody when he was being produced at the district courts in Sector 43 Tuesday. He allegedly fled with the help of three friends, the police said. The UT Police have booked five people, including a Chandigarh Police constable, in the case.
According to the police, the undertrial — Rajan Bhatti alias Rajbir (23)— was on the third floor of the district court, when a girl, who has been identified as Pooja, gave him a mobile phone. Following this, Bhatti shoved constable Harbans Singh and fled from the spot. According to the police, Bhatti’s friends, who have been identified as Rajbir and Sunny, were waiting for him on the ground floor.
Later, the police arrested Pooja, who is said to be a friend of Bhatti. The police are interrogating her.
Bhatti was booked in a rape case at the Sector 31 police station. He had fired at the DSP(Crime) when a police team went to arrest him in Sector 9. He was nabbed from near a petrol pump in the same sector on May 16.
Bhatti, who hails from Gurdaspur district, is wanted by the Punjab Police in cases including NDPS, assault, and attempt to murder. Bhatti was also booked by the UT Police in three cases.
