A two-year-old girl and her aunt were crushed to death under the wheels of a Punjab Roadways bus today. As per available information,the bus driver suffered a heart stroke after which he rammed the vehicle into a rickshaw carrying a woman,her two-year-old daughter and her cousin. Nine passengers inside the bus too suffered serious injuries. The accident took place on the Sector 43-44 dividing road at around 1:30 pm after the bus had left for Hoshiarpur from the Sector 43 bus stand.
Two-year-old Priya,her mother Anita and aunt Shobha were going for a medical check-up on a rickshaw when the mishap took place. The rickshaw was crushed after the accident. Priya and her aunt Shobha were declared dead on arrival at GMCH-32 and PGI.
According to police sources,the bus driver Sarabjeet suffered a heart stroke and lost control of the bus. He first rammed the bus into the rickshaw and then into a tree.
Anita was admitted to GMCH-32 where her condition is stated to be critical. The condition of the rickshaw-puller Bhajan Lal,who has been admitted to the PGI Advanced Trauma Centre,too is critical.
An FIR has been registered against the bus driver Sarabjeet under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way),335 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt on provocation) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) at the Sector 36 police station. He is admitted in PGI.
According to police sources,Sarabjeet lost control of the bus after suffering a heart stroke. He took a left turn (towards Sector 35) rather than taking a right turn (to head towards Hoshiarpur). There were 21 passengers in the bus of whom nine suffered injuries.
