Two rallies by different political parties in Panchkula disrupted city traffic and caused major traffic jams on the road connecting Chandigarh and Panchkula on Thursday.

The rally in the morning, taken out by the members of the CPM,started from Yavanika Park in Sector 5 and ended near Housing Board Chowk. The party members demanded that small plots of land should be allotted to all poor families. Another demand of the party was that foodgrains should be provided at the cost of Rs 2 per kg to all poor families. The party leaders mentioned that major part of the crops rot at the government warehouses but are not distributed.

During the evening, the rally organised by the Indian Bahujan Sandesh Party (Kanshiram) reached Panchkula from Kurukshetra and tried to proceed towards Chandigarh through the Housing Board Chowk. The party demanded that President’s rule be applied in the state of Haryana,as the present government had been unable to maintain law and order and curb corruption and crime in the state.

About 300 workers participated in the CPM rally while nearly 500 workers were present in the rally conducted by the IBSP (Kanshiram). Both the groups were stopped near the Housing Board Chowk from proceeding into Chandigarh. A traffic diversion was created by Chandigarh Police near the chowk not allowing vehicles from Chandigarh to enter Panchkula. This led to heavy traffic jam at the alternative route connecting the two cities via Mansa Devi Chowk. Chandigarh traffic police had made the diversion to ensure that the rallying groups were unable to enter Chandigarh.

Surabhi Bakshi,a resident of Chandigarh, who works at IT Park, said,“I took half an hour to cover the stretch of road from Panchkula to Chandigarh, which normally does not take more than five minutes.”

Panchkula traffic SHO Surrender Singh said,“Though there was heavy traffic near housing board,we had created efficient traffic diversions to facilitate traffic movement.”
