Traffic cops issue 500 challans daily: RTI reply

The Chandigarh traffic police has been issuing around 500 challans daily on an average for the past three years. This has come to light through an RTI filed by R K Garg,a resident of Sector 27. The Chandigarh traffic police has challaned 18,557 traffic offenders for jumping red light till mid 2013. For the same offence,the police had challaned 24,723 persons in 2012,the RTI reply said.

The RTI also disclosed that 170 persons were caught by the traffic police till mid 2013 for smoking while driving. In 2012,325 persons were caught for the same offence.

The Chandigarh traffic police has caught 82 under-age (below 18 years) drivers till mid 2013 as compared to 152 minors caught in 2012.

As many as 2,406 persons have been challaned till mid 2013 for using fake number plates on their vehicle,while 1,931 offenders were challaned in 2012 for the same.
