IN A bid to help students tackle exam stress, the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) has come out with a special issue of their monthly magazine “Pankhrhiyan”. The February-March edition features 70 articles written by as many writers on various topics dealing with attempting exams, preventing mistakes, handling pressures and staying motivated.
While the writers include some prominent people like Punjab’s Education Minister D S Cheema, children’s writer Dr B S Rattan among others, most writers have no association to children’s literature or psychology. Articles by last year’s toppers not only help candidates who are preparing for exams this year but also inspire children to write. Personal stories of teachers, professors and retired principals also find place in the magazine.
The 124-page magazine has been printed on glossy paper of high quality unlike the regular 32-page editions printed on paper of low quality.
Chairperson of the board Dr Tejinder Kaur Dhaliwal said, “We felt that positive motivation was lacking in students; we needed to do something to de-stress them and help them deal with exam-related problems.”
The magazine usually prints about 3,500 copies but this special edition has more than 29,000 printed copies and two copies each have been sent to all schools affiliated with the board.
On being asked about the reach and availability of this magazine to students, the chairperson said, “Next year it will be available to all even if it does not reach them this year.”
If one is to estimate the number of students in board-affiliated high schools and senior secondary schools, the number would exceed 10 lakh. Sending two copies to each school of a magazine does not seem quite adequate.
Editor of the magazine Komal Singh said, “This is the first step towards a noble cause. Children today don’t take commands, so this magazine is a platform for dialogue to connect with them and help them.”
