Nearly three weeks after he was named as a prime accused in a murder case,a Punjab Congress leader’s husband faces arrest as the Punjab Police on Wednesday got a warrant issued from a Ferozepur court.

Jasmail Singh, husband of Congress candidate Satkar Kaur, the Congress candidate from Ferozepur (Rural) Assembly constituency, had been evading arrest since September 30 when he allegedly shot dead Piaranwala village resident Nishan Singh, outside a polling booth. Police had declared him an absconder and had then moved court seeking his arrest warrant.

Confirming the development,HS Mann,Senior Superintendent of Police,Ferozepur, said,“We have obtained arrest warrant. Proceedings to get him declared a proclaimed offender have also been initiated.”

The SSP added that police had issued notices asking Jasmail to cooperate with investigators, but he never responded. The Ferozepur police have already questioned his father, wife and other close relatives regarding his whereabouts, but everybody denied having such any information.

“I do not know the whereabouts of my husband. He has not contacted me ever since his name figured in the FIR registered against him on charges of murder,” Satkar Kaur had recently told the police during interrogation.

Prior to the murder case being registered against him,Jasmail aka Ladi Gayri had no criminal record. Nishan Singh, the victim, was the only son of his parents and had gone to the polling booth with his friends, when Jasmail and his supporters reached the polling booth and on entering into an altercation with a group of people assembled outside the polling booth opened gunfire. The bullet fired by Jasmail allegedly hit Nishan, killing him.
