Incident took place in presence of senior district officials
Three players were injured in clashes during the ongoing district level Panchayati Raj Sports meet that is being held in the Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Sector 3.
Sources said that clashes erupted at around 12.30 pm,on Thursday,when the Barwala team in the racing competition objected to the participation of hostelers in the event. This annoyed the hostelers and they entered into an argument with the Barwala team.
As the two sides were exchanging heated arguments,some one started beating the Barwala players with hockey sticks. The clash continued for some time,before the police brought the situation under control, said a police officer in Sector 5. One player of Barwala Ranndir Singh was injured in the clashes and he was shifted to the General Hospital in Sector 6. There was minor injury to few other players The clashes took place in presence of senior district officials.
As the news about the clashes reached Barwala and adjoining villages,many villagers reached Sector 3. Police personnel were,however,able to pacify the crowd,by promising that they will initiate action against those involved in the attack on players.
The district level Panchayati Raj Sports is meant for the players of villages and hostelers are not entitled to play, said a Barwala resident,Kewal Kumar. We want strict action against those involved in the assault of players.
A case was registered in Sector 5 police station. This is the second incident of beating players in the Tricity in past month. On January,11 school players of the Kerala handball team were allegedly beaten up by players and supporters of the Chandigarh team.
