Thieves strike at Mohali shops

More than a dozen shops were broken into and many of them looted from a market in Phase 10 in the wee hours on Friday.

More than a dozen shops were broken into and many of them looted from a market in Phase 10 in the wee hours on Friday. While thieves broke into 10 booths in the mini-market in Phase 10,two-three shops in the main market,too,were ransacked.

The total worth of cash and other items stolen from the shops is estimated to be around Rs 2 lakh. The shopkeepers alleged that cash worth around Rs 55,000 and various other goods including laptops,mobiles and perfumes were stolen.

Complainant Rajendra Prasad said,his son was tipped off about the burglary at around 6 am on Friday following which he went to the mini-market and found that locks of several shops were broken. According to the shopkeepers,the security guard deployed at the mini-market had stopped coming to work a few days ago following a quarrel with one of the shopkeepers. They also said that the last shopowner left around 2 am on Friday. While only minor items were stolen from many booths ,around 4-5 shopowners alleged several goods and cash were missing from their shops.

A case of theft has been registered with the Phase 11 police under Section 380 of the Indian Penal Code.
