A NIGHT food street is likely to be set up in Mohali soon. The Mohali administration has identified some places to set up the night food street to fulfil the long pending demand of professionals working in IT companies here.
According to sources, the administration is in touch with the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) for finalising some places where night food street could be started. Phase-7, Phase-1 and Phase-5 are among some places that have found favour for opening of the night food street as these two areas are near the Industrial Area where a number of IT companies are located. It has been proposed that booths be constructed at the selected location where a variety of food items can be sold.
A senior official asserts that the idea of starting the night food street was being worked out as the city had become a favourite among the youth population. “See there is IT industry and thousands of young people are working here till late into night. So the idea of starting a night food street could come in handy,” added the official.
Around 50,000 professionals are working in various IT companies in Mohali. The local MLA had also raised this demand around three years ago following which the administration made a proposal.
The president of Mohali Industries Association, Sanjeev Vashist, said that it was a good idea as there was no such facility where the professionals working late into night can have the meals. He said that he would meet the authorities concerned and also suggest them that the food street could be started in the Industrial Area.
In Chandigarh, the night food street that was set up near PGI and Panjab University has witnessed deterioration over time. The night food street that attracted a lot of people initially saw the booths being vacant after the civic body auctioned these at high prices. The lack of hygiene was another problem. Another food street constructed by the Municipal Corporation in Sector 48, Chandigarh, has been lying vacant for several years with the booths not having been allotted.
