The 41-year-old son of a retired Inspector General of Police in Punjab was arrested in the wee hours of Monday for rash and drink-driving after he knocked down a hawker in the Lokhandwala area of Andheri (West) in Mumbai.
The accused allegedly abused the duty officer, and other police inspectors when he was taken to the Versova police station. When presented before the court on Monday morning,he alleged, that he was harassed and beaten up by the police.
According to Nandkumar Mhetar, senior police inspector of Versova police station, the accused identified as Paramveer Sandhu who stays at the Juhu Omkar building located on the Juhu-Versova Link road in Andheri (West) was travelling in his Ford Endeavor SUV with a friend Poonam Sompat (30) at 1.20 am on Monday. His father,Parminder Sandhu,is a retired Punjab IPS officer, police said.
Sandhu had reached the Swami Samarth circle at Lokhandwala, when he allegedly lost control of his vehicle and crashed into Ram Prakash Sagar Singh, who was on a cycle. Singh received injuries after he fell from his cycle due to the impact of the accident.
Mhetar said that after the accident Sandhu tried to flee the spot, when a journalist,Abdul Kazi chased him in his Tata Sumo. Sandhu was nabbed near the HDFC bank at Four Bungalows by locals who began beating him. Kazi, who was present at the spot, called up the police and reported the incident. Singh was taken to the Cooper Hospital and was discharged after treatment.
The Versova police reached the spot and arrested Sandhu, who owns a film production company.
When we brought Sandhu to the police station,he began abusing the duty officer claiming that he was the son of an IG. When we took him to the Cooper Hospital for a medical examination,he abused the doctor as well and did not allow his blood to be taken. However, the doctor confirmed that the accused was under the influence of alcohol, said Mhetar.
The Versova police arrested Sandhu for rash and drink-driving and for abusing a public servant. The police are now verifying the documents of the vehicle to find out whether Sandhu is its owner. The police have also asked the RTO officers to check the vehicle and give their report.
The court has ordered a medical examination and there will also be an enquiry to find out whether his allegations are correct. We,however, have the CCTV recording of the police station where Sandhu abused and shouted at the policemen flaunting his fathers name. We also have witnesses like Sompat and the doctor of Cooper Hospital, said Mhetar.
Sandhu has been remanded to police custody for a day.
