Despite the largely effective arrangements made by the Chandigarh Police for conducting smooth elections in Panjab University and its affiliated colleges,some instances of the violation of rules and minor clashes were reported.

In Government College,Sector 11,members of a party alleged that some students had collected identity cards of about 20 students and were giving them in exchange for money to others so that they could cast their votes. The students were caught by the college administration and the identity cards were confiscated from them.

Principal,J S Raghu,denied all the allegations,and said that the identity cards were collected as a preventive measure when a large group of NSS students were seen together on campus. In another incident in the same college today,a female student there was found casting fake votes,and was rounded up by the police. In Panjab University,the election process went smoothly till the results were announced. As the results of various department were announced and SOPU’s victory in th eelections became clear,the supporters started the celebrations.

Jubilant SOPU members came in cars near the PUSU tent pitched for election campaigning,and raised slogans,which caused a stir among the PUSU members. However,the situation was controlled by the police immediately and the area was barricaded.

After the results were announced,Barinder Dhillon,a SOPU leader,was apprehended by the university’s Chief Security Officer,P K Dhawan,and was not allowed to enter the students’ centre. He threatened to halt the students’ council meeting,but Satinder Singh Satti,the newly elected president,escorted him to the students’ centre.

Other members of the winning alliance also tried to cross the barricade to enter but were stopped by police officials. SOPU leader Barinder Dhillon said,“It has been decided that Sattinder Singh Satti,the new president,will soon be joining the Akali Dal,which supports SOI in the University”. Satti received 3978 votes and won by 533 votes.
