After her marriage broke down,Shipra Khanna,30,did not know what to do with her life. Over a period of time, however, she chose cooking as one of her stress-busters,and that became her passion.

Two days ago when Shipra, mother of two, stood next to actor Akshay Kumar after winning Materchef India 2,she she thanked God for being on her side.

“My mother is my biggest motivator. Had she not inspired me to cooking,I would not have won this title. Thanks Mom,” said Shipra,a product of Shimla’s St Bede’s College.

Her mother Radha Khanna says “my child has gone through a very bad phase in her early life”. “She was just out of college when we married her off. It was a terrible time and finally we told her to call it off and return home. Today, this winner is a miracle child, happy and contended,” she said. “Shipra really made us and Shimla proud. Fame after a lot of struggle is the best thing that happened to her.”

Now Shipra has a lot of plans from opening a restaurant to popularise authentic Himachali cousines to undergoing a formal cooking course. “I am going to share a part of my cash prize of Rs 1 crore with special children studying at a school near Shimla,” she said. “I know it’s just one step,I have to go miles.”

Beside the prize money, she has an opportunity to host a show on Star Plus as part of her contract and go on vacation for three nights and four days in London.

One of three siblings of Balween Khanna and Radha,Shipra did her schooling at Shimla’s leading Tara Hall school and later graduated from St. Bede’s College. Her father and brother run a jewellery showroom.

Sunday’s final battle had seen the two finalists — Salma Shazia and Shipra — preparing dishes for 100 people.
