Having made it to the merit lists of various departments at the Panjab University, the fate of the students of Chandra Mohan Jha University (CMJU),Shillong,is in limbo.

As per the data collected by Chandigarh Newsline,on average two to four students of CMJU at various departments of arts faculty figure on the merit lists.

For the first time,a large number of students from CMJU had applied for admission to various courses at PU. Most of the students have more than 75 per cent marks in their graduation.

While over eight students had applied for admission to the sociology department, two of them made it to the general category merit list. Similarly,at the political science department, three students made it to the first merit list. At the public administration department, four students figured on the merit list and around five students at history department found a place on the merit list.

The CMJU is under the scanner for awarding as many as 434 PhD degrees in 2012-13 academic session alone. Even the Meghalaya governor had lodged an FIR against the varsity for committing various acts of corruption, including issuance of fake PhD degrees. The PU authorities are all set to bring this matter for discussion at the Syndicate meeting slated to be held this month-end.

“We were shocked at the marks these students secured. Despite 5 per cent weightage to the PU students, students of CMJU were ahead of them. We were suspicious of the varsity,so we asked the PU authorities about its status, and they told us that they had asked the UGC about its status. Already,UGC has put a notice regarding this varsity on its website,” said a chairperson.

Even the UGC through a public notice, also available on its site, has informed the general public that according to the principal secretary to the government of Meghalaya, vide a letter dated June 12,the Governor has recommended the dissolution of CMJU in terms of Section 48 of the CMJ University Act,2009.

“During an interview at the department of history, one of the professors asked a CMJU applicant what all subjects he studied. The student said he did not study anything and got the degree after paying Rs 30,000,” said a professor.

He added,“I wonder how there is an equivalence between PU and CMJU which is a bogus varsity. They should not have allowed the students with CMJU degrees to apply for admission at PU.”

When contacted,Dean University Instruction Prof Madhu Rakka said,“The admission of CMJU students is under the scanner. We have asked the departments to make provisional admission. We have already written to the UGC to seek its reply regarding the status of CMJU. The matter will also be taken up at the Syndicate meeting scheduled for this month.”

The departments have also asked the successful candidates of CMJU to submit an affidavit, stating that their admissions will be subject to the decision of the UGC and the Syndicate.
