Resentment is brewing up among regular invitees to the At Home function after the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj Patil decided to skip the event. Residents from various sections are thinking of skipping the function.

Many opine that the tradition of the Governor hosting the At Home ceremony should not have been broken. Patil has chosen to hoist the national flag in Rajasthan, where he holds the additional charge of Governor.

On Republic Day,the Governor hosts the At Home at Punjab Raj Bhavan in the evening. Dignitaries from Punjab and Chandigarh are invited for the event. However, this time with the Governor not being there, the event would be hosted by the UT Advisor K K Sharma at the Raj Bhavan guest house.

Brig (retd) K S Kahlon, the president All India Defence Brotherhood,Punjab, says,“The tradition should have continued. It is a dishonour to the retired defence personnel who are invited at every At Home. The Governor should not have missed the event. People come to attend the At Home even in the worst of weathers. It is important that the Governor be present to host the event.”

The regular invitees are not keen to attend the function. BJP city unit chief Sanjay Tandon said that when the host is not present, then there is no purpose of attending the event. “The At Home is traditionally hosted by the Governor. If he is not going to be present, the attendance would dip. The turnout is as it is expected to be low due to Punjab elections,” he said.

Even in Congress, not many are sure of attending. One of the leaders informed that a request was made to give names of 10 Congress leaders who would be invited for the event.

Officials claim that the Governor had chosen to skip the event owing to the non-availability of Punjab ministers and MLAs due to elections.
