It was on October 23 last year that the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Shalini Singh Nagpal had framed charges against Sonu Chauhan alias Rahul,a resident of Maloya, for attempting to murder a 22-year-old woman who had refused to marry him. On Monday, the accused was sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment and slapped with a penalty of Rs 7,000.

Chauhan was convicted in just four hearings (all witnesses were examined and cross-examined in four dates). On April 26,he was held guilty of attempting to murder 22-year-old Sonu Rani by stabbing her several times with a knife and thrashing her father.

On June 1 last year,an FIR was lodged by Sonu Rani’s father Yash Pal at Sector 39 Police Station. The accused was arrested and produced in the court on June 3 last. The UT Police submitted a chargesheet on July 30,2012,and the court framed charges against the accused on October 23,2012. Ten prosecution witnesses were examined by the public prosecutor in four hearings and Chauhan was held guilty on April 26.

At about 3 pm on June 1 last year,Yash Pal,Sonu Rani’s father, and Sonu Rani were in their house when Chauhan came in the gallery of their house and called Yash Pal outside. Chauhan was under the influence of liquor as per Yash Pal. The accused told him that he wanted to marry Yash Pal’s daughter Sonu Rani. However,as Yash Pal refused, following which Chauhan thrashed him with a stick.

Hearing the cries of her father,Sonu Rani came out. Chauhan took out a knife from his trouser pocket and attacked Sonu Rani. He stabbed her six times in the stomach and her back. The accused fled as the father-daughter duo raised the alarm. Sonu Rani’s mother called police and both Yash Pal and Sonu were rushed to the hospital. According to the judgment, the statement of the complainant derives strength and support from that of his daughter.
