Senior Advocate Heera Lal Sibal, was felicitated by Punjabi University and the Manto Foundation,Chandigarh, for his exceptional contribution to the Urdu Adab at his residence in Sector 5 on Friday.
The advocate had defended the celebrated writer Sandat Hasan Manto in criminal cases lodged against him in Lahore before Partition.
Speaking to Newsline,Shahida, from the Manto Foundation said: Manto was charged with obscenity for two of his writings that appeared in an Urdu magazine in 1945. It was then that Sibal took up his case and defended him successfully and therefore ensured that these writings were available for everyone to read.
Jaspal Singh,Vice-Chancellor,Punjabi University,Patiala, said the university decided to honour Sibal as part of Mantos birth centenary celebrations.
Sibal has done a great service to literature by defending writers like Manto and Ismat Chugtai. These writers were ahead of their time because of their revolutionary writings and had many strong enemies, Singh said.
He added that the senior advocate had even defended Manto free of cost and is the last living link between Manto and those who admire his writings today.
