With the Centre’s decision to be effective from the coming academic session, students under the SC/ST category will be exempted from paying any fees for the regular courses offered by the Panjab University (PU) and its affiliated colleges. The exemption, however, does not include the self-financed courses.

The fee money for the SC/ST students would be refunded to the university by the Chandigarh Welfare Department.

The PU authorities, meanwhile, have allegedly increased the examination fee from Rs 870 to Rs 990. Though no formal information was communicated, the students reportedly had to shell out a higher amount when they went to deposit their fees today.

The students have decided to take up the issue with the authorities. ABVP president Prashant Sharma said,“We will not let the authorities hike the fee. This is really uncalled for. We have taken up the matter with the officials”.

The PU Registrar, however, maintained: “I am not aware of any such fee hike but if there has been any,the same would have been properly approved”.
