Ice-capped mountains,a rough terrain and soldiers braving the vagaries of weather the tableau of Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) depicts the areas where the technologies developed by it are put to use. The tableau would be part of the Republic Day parade at New Delhi.
This is the first time that SASE would be showcasing its achievements at the parade. Officials of SASE from the city would be part of the parade. The field laboratory of Defence,Research and Development Organization (DRD) is present at Manali.
The tableau depicts the staff of SASE working in the harsh weather conditions. In freezing temperatures, the team is involved in conducting experiments to facilitate our defence personnel. Known as Saviours of Cold Regions,SASE is involved in ensuring the safe mobility of Indian troops by issuing timely avalanche and weather forecasts. Using remote sensing data such as satellite imageries and a network of manual and automatic weather stations across the north-western and central Himalayas, the warnings for avalanches are given.
SASE Deputy Director Jimmy Kansal said,DRDO wanted SASE to showcase the work that is undertaken by us. The tableau will throw some light on the equipment that has been installed. Apart from other areas,we are involved in making forecasts about avalanches which is essential for the movement of our soldiers. There is a high level of accuracy in the forecasts. SASE is also working on controlling avalanches, he informed.
The Establishment has also developed techniques to control avalanches and trains soldiers in avalanche safety and rescue methods. It ties up with various institutes to conduct research in the field.
