SAS Nagar declared Punjab’s first smoke-free district

Government had announced that it would declare Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar as the first “Smoke Free” district of Punjab.

The Punjab government here today formally declared Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali) as the first “smoke free” district of Punjab. Satish Chandra,Principal Secretary Health and Family Welfare,Punjab while announcing the decision said that earlier,on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day,May 31,2011,the Government had announced that it would declare Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar as the first “Smoke Free” district of Punjab.

Thereafter,the Tobacco Control Cell in Punjab had been making consistent efforts in this regard. NGO International Union against TB and Lung Diseases held sensitisation workshops of all stake holders in collaboration with NGO Generation Saviours Association,Mohali. School of Public Health PGIMER,Chandigarh was entrusted the task of conducting a survey to verify the compliance of COTPA Act,2003 (Cigarettes & Other Tobacco Products Act) in SAS Nagar. Dr Sonu Goel,Assistant Professor of Health Management,PGI has in his report concluded that “compliance rate observed for various indicators in all the Community Development Blocks of Mohali is between 88-100 per cent.” Satish Chandra added that this study paved the way for officially declaring SAS Nagar as the first “Smoke Free” district of Punjab.

He said that SAS Nagar has been declared a “Smoke Free” district and the entire state will be covered in a phased manner.
