The Mohali police has registered a case against the sarpanch of a village in Panchkula who allegedly raped a 21-year-old married woman while taking her from Dera Bassi to her house in Raipur Rani on Sunday night. The accused then allegedly fled after leaving her in a deserted area.
The police identified the suspect as Mangat Ram, sarpanch of Chhota Tarlokpur village near Raipur Rani. The suspect is absconding, police said.
According to the police, the victim got married three years ago to a Raipur Rani resident and has a one-and-a-half year old son. However, around three-four months ago, she came to Dera Bassi to live with her aunt following a dispute with her husband.

The victim alleged that on Sunday morning, Mangat Ram, who knew her through her husband, called her up in the morning but she did not take his calls. However, he called her again around 4 pm and asked her to meet him in Dera Bassi. She met him in a market in Dera Bassi after a few hours, he asked her to go back to her husband’s house.
The sarpanch allegedly told the victim that her son was sick and she should immediately go back to her home.
“The victim agreed and she agreed to go with Mangat Ram to her village Batauli near Raipur Rani in his Maruti Alto. On the way, the suspect first stopped at a shop to buy some refreshments and then stopped for dinner, which took some time. Around 10 pm, he stopped his car at a secluded spot on the way on the pretext of relieving himself,” said a police official.
He added, “Seeing that no body else was around, he dragged the victim out into the bushes and raped her. When she raised an alarm, he fled in his car and left her at the spot. She called her aunt on her phone and it was around 11 pm that they reached there and
took her to the Dera Bassi civil hospital. She is still undergoing treatment.”
Acting on her complaint, the police registered a case against Mangat Ram under Section 376 of the IPC at the Lalru police station. The police said that efforts to nab him were on.
