In a blow to SAD-BJP’s drive against drug abuse, the Rajasthan police have arrested two senior leaders of the alliance with 7.5 kg of poppy husk.
The arrests took place at Pallu sub-tehsil in Hanumangarh district late evening on June 29.
Vijay Kumar Kamboj alias Daddi, a senior BJP leader and block samiti member from Asafwala in Fazilka district, and Mahal Singh Rana, block president of SAD rural, also from Fazilka, have been booked under the NDPS Act. Their supporters, Lekhram, Balbir Singh and Ved Parkash, who accompanied them, have also been booked under the same Act.

Daddi has been a frequent party-hopper and had quit Congress to join BJP ahead of the 2012 Vidhan Sabha polls. He is the Chairman of Punjab Infrastructure Development Board and is considered a close aide of Jayani. He has often been spotted with Jayani at public as well as private functions.
Daddi along with others was on his way to Fazlika in his Verna car with a blue beacon — reportedly not authorised to him — when he was flagged at a police Naka in Pallu. However, the occupants chose not to stop the car and sped off. Police gave them a chase and caught them near Gulabgarh village.
“On searching the car (DL3C- AT2161, we found five packets of poppy husk, each weighing 1.5 kg,” SHO, Pallu, Sunil Charan said. He SHO confirmed the arrest of five persons and said all of them were on police remand and will be produced in court Thursday.
‘Zero tolerance for drug traffickers’
While Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal was unavailable for comments, his media advisor, Jangveer Singh, said, “I have no idea if the man in question is an active member of SAD or not but we have zero tolerance for drugs and drug traffickers and anyone found involved in this business will face action.”
Will act: Jayani
Health Minister Surjit Kumar Jayani, when contacted, said, “I have come to know of this incident. We will expel such a person who has defamed the party. If Rajasthan police has arrested a party member, action would be taken against him as per law. Our stand is clear and we will continue the fight against drugs.”
