Keeping its promise of providing world-class facilities to the students of Panjab University (PU), the Punjab government has finally approved the pending cheques for starting two shuttle bus services, besides installation of solar heaters in the hostels and over 400 fans in the Arts faculty.
At the swearing-in ceremony of the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) in September this year, Sukhbir Singh Badal, who is also the president of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), had announced that the state government would give funds up to Rs 3 crore for development projects at PU. The shuttle bus services were announced for smooth commuting between the varsity’s two campuses.
Badal had also stated that funds would be provided for the installation of washing machines in all hostels, and for the establishment of a health centre near the girls’ hostels.
Chandigarh president of Students’ Organisation of India (SOI) Vicky Middhukhera said, “We have got a confirmation for sanction of money for four projects.”
Reportedly, the project for setting up of a world-class gymnasium at the girls’ hostel has been stalled for now, owing to some pending negotiations with the PU authorities. Sources in SOI have also revealed that the party is planning to approach Minister of Human Resource and Development Smriti Irani to discuss the dwindling financial condition of the university.
The Students’ Organisation of India, along with PUCSC, will hold a press conference Thursday to announce the sanctioned projects.
