With the announcement of the Railway Budget,Chandigarh has gotten several new trains,increasing the connectivity of the city,making different parts of the country more accessible. At the same time,in order to cope with these additions,the railway station will need to upgrade its infrastructure.
There will now be a total number of 12 trains carrying passengers between New Delhi and Chandigarh,including three Shatabdis,the Himalyan Queen and a train to Hazrat Nizamuddin.
Apart from the trains that either depart from Chandigarh railway station or terminate there,several long distance trains that will also pass through the city,with some even passing through remote areas around the city.
A bi-weekly train that passes through Rajasthan and Gujarat connects Chandigarh to Mumbai. Indian Rail Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) also offers special tour packages to Goa and a new train has been added to ply pass to the state. A new train was announced to Indore as well.
Several religious places will also become more accessible. Once the Kalka-Katra train starts,a trip to Vaishno Devi temple will become easy. Other attractive additions are the trains to Amritsar,Hazoor Sahib,Anandpur Sahib and Shirdi.
Connectivity to Bengaluru,increased frequency to Chennai and connectivity to Yamunanagar are also in the pipeline. There is a train already plying to Kerala.
The increase in the frequency of trains has been welcomed by the members of the Malayalee Samajam,Mohali. President of the Samajam Benny Thomas said that this was a long pending demand that has finally been fulfilled.
Once the Chandigarh-Ludhiana track is commissioned,the frequency of trains to and from the city is expected to increase. To cope with the new demand,the citys railway station will need to work on its infrastructure. For instance,parking space needs to be expanded. Especially after a third Shatabdi was introduced between Chandigarh and New Delhi,the parking facility at the station was burdened heavily.
