Beginning preparations for Union Minister Virbhadra Singhs mega political event in the town to mark his 50 years in politics on May 5,his loyalists today approached Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal to seek the Administrations permission to host the event at the historic Ridge Maidan.
A group of Congress MLAs led by Sudhir Sharma and Nand Lal met Dhumal and submitted the request in writing.
However,Dhumal quoted precedents to deny them permission. He claimed that Virbhadra Singh does not have any threat perception like countrys prominent leaders like UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi or former Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani and that rules cannot be relaxed for him.
An MLA said,We aware that the chief minister will never allow his political rival to get honoured at a place like Ridge. We have several instances on record when the Ridge was allowed for political functions by the BJP.
Insiders say the loyalists are eyeing the ice skating rink for the function which they plan to make historic by getting people from all over the state.
Meanwhile, state government today introduced a bill to amend Shimla Road Users and Pedestrians (Public safety and convenience) Act to allow entry of vehicles in the core Mall Road.
The local administration has experienced difficulties in allowing vehicles required for celebration of Republic Day,Independence Day and other functions including film shootings on Mall Road, and has requested relaxations. Through this amendment, any vehicles could be declared as public utility vehicle for relaxations, says the Act.
