City residents on Thursday welcomed the decision of the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) to reject the proposal of the Electricity Department for a hike in power tariff.

The Bharatiya Janata Party claimed that it was due to the party’s efforts that the proposal was rejected. The party leaders contended that it was the inefficiencies of the Electricity Department which were being covered up by the burden being passed on to the common man.

BJP leaders also condemned the Congress for not caring for the residents. They stated that the party was conspicuous by its absence when there was a need to seek relief for the residents.

Meanwhile,in a statement issued on Thursday, members of the Chandigarh Business Council, welcomed the decision and stated that instead of increasing the rates, the Administration should look towards removing kundi connections and issuing challans.

The Chandigarh Residents Social Welfare Federation held a meeting on Thursday and stated that the decision comes as a relief for the city residents. The residents of different sections of society including sector welfare associations, trade unions, industrial bodies and others have put forth their views strongly against this arbitrary and unilateral proposal to hike more than 45 per cent, especially when there is a surplus budget with the Chandigarh Administration.
