Khad Banao Kendra, set up by the Municipal Corporation to collect horticulture waste,at Chandigarh Sector 48 was demolished owing to complaints by residents.

“The residents had been complaining that the Kendra had become a nuisance and they wanted it removed. Being located in a residential area,it (the Kendra) was useless as there was no horticulture waste. People,in-fact,dumped solid and kitchen waste at the Kendra,” said Davesh Moudgil,Ward Councillor,Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.

The residents had complained that poly bags were strewn near the Kendra and garbage emanated foul smell,he added.

“There were also complains regarding anti-social elements seeking the unused enclosure as there were no checks. The land is reserved,so it has to be earmarked before it is allocated for some other purpose,” said Dharmendra,SDO,Chandigarh MC.

Residents were also concerned about garbage being collected near a ‘sacred’ fig tree that was inside the compound of the Kendra.

Even though the Kendra was not used for its original purpose and suffered from lack of official monitoring,it was being used to dump garbage by residents in the absence of a Sehaj Safai Kendra (SSK) in the colony.

“There is a proposal to construct an SSK,but no land has been authorised for the purpose,so far. As soon as we receive orders from the engineering department,we will construct it,” said an MC official.

Moudgil said after the demolition, the garbage retrieved had to be transported outside the locality. He feels that because of its location and proximity to houses, there was no chance the plot could be converted into an SSK.
