Expressing deep concern over the leakage from Sukhna flood gates, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday directed the Chandigarh Administration to repair the flood gates in the lake.

Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Administration,as demanded by the High Court,on Friday filed a report stating that the Administration does not have excess water to pour into Sukhna. The court,on the last date of hearing, had questioned the Administration as to why excess water received by Chandigarh in the months of December and January cannot be poured into Sukhna.

Elaborating, senior standing counsel for UT Administration,Sanjay Kaushal stated that “excess water is not available” with Chandigarh. He said of the 87 mgd water available,67 mgd water is drawn from Kajauli water works.

He added that Chandigarh does not have “spare water” and that in summer,Chandigarh falls short of water. Kaushal added that in winter, dependence on tubewells slightly decrease and maximum water is drawn from canal.

He said that to find a practical and feasible solution, the Chandigarh Administration had approached the National Institute of Hydrology. Meanwhile, residents of Village Kansal on Friday moved the High Court seeking permission to be impleaded as party to the PIL. The Administration has been asked to file a status report within two months.
