Three years after the mysterious death of a realtor, that had been dubbed as a suicide by the Mohali Police, his alleged girlfriend and her husband will now undergo a narco analysis test. Their names had cropped up during a re-investigation ordered by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Police had earlier this week approached a Mohali Court seeking permission to conduct the test on the duo. Sources told Newsline that the two (names withheld) have given their consent.
In another significant development, the Mohali Police has received the DNA report in the case after a two-year wait. The DNA test was ordered as the victims body was charred and despite his parents testifying that the body was of their son, samples had been sent to a lab in Gandhinagar,Gujarat. The Mohali Police had been citing this delay to seek time from the high court in response to a petition demanding a CBI probe in the case.
The case dates back to November 27,2010,when a body, purportedly belonging to realtor Suresh Kumar (28),was recovered from his burnt car in Siswan area near Baddi,Himachal Pradesh. While his family had all along been claiming that his death was a murder, the Mohali Police has failed to solve the case. No arrests have been made so far.
Completely unsatisfied with the quality of investigations, the High Court had directed the Mohali Police to conduct a review of the investigation in July 2012. In its latest status report submitted last month, the Mohali Police had hinted at suicide but stated that it was yet to reach a logical conclusion.
Police seem to have based their theory on the presumption that Suresh may have been stressed as his then girlfriend was to marry another man. The status report stated that a couple of days before his mysterious death,28-year-old Kumar had informed his sister by phone that he would die as he was not able to marry the woman he loved. Last July, the high court had also taken strong note of the snails pace at which the investigation was progressing.
The Mohali Police will be finally making the two suspects (Kumars alleged girlfriend and her husband) undergo a narco test. The victims family,on the other hand, have given the Mohali Police time till July 14 to arrest the murderers, failing which they have threatened to hold demonstrations against the police force.
We have tolerated enough but no more. If the police is unable to catch the culprits,we will hold protests against them, said Rakesh,Sureshs brother.
Assuring action,Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said: The special investigation team (SIT) constituted is exploring all possible angles to ascertain the cause of Kumars death. We will be submitting a detailed report to the high court on the next date of hearing.
