Chandigarh left-arm spinner Gurinder Singh has been phenomenal with his performance in the last couple of years. A total of 17 wickets and 25-odd runs in four matches for Punjab A in the (U-25) national tournament last season and Gurinder Singh proved himself as a utility player. A useful all-rounder,Gurinder was even included in the Punjab T-20 and ODI teams for Syed Mustaq Ali and Vijay Hazare Trophy respectively. Despite limited opportunities in these tournaments,Gurinder maintained his reputation as a good future prospect for Punjab at the senior domestic circuit. Also, since Punjab left-arm spinner Bipul Sharma has moved to HPCA from PCA,a slot is available for the 20-year-old to establish himself in the Punjab Ranji Trophy squad.
Gurinder feels he needs to perform well in the upcoming Punjab inter-district tournament, and also stand up to the next challenges to prove his worth and secure a berth in the Punjab Ranji Trophy squad.
Talking to Sportline about the upcoming season,Gurinder said: I have been working hard on my bowling in the past few months. Bowling in the longer version of the game is altogether different from bowling in the shorter versions. I have been spending a lot of time in the nets and working on flighting and spinning the ball with my coach,Harish Sharma sir. I want to perform well in every department of the game in order to secure a place in the Punjab Ranji Trophy squad. The game changes altogether at the Ranji level. The standards are quite high,as one has to bowl to established batsmen. As far as question of Bipul paaji’s slot goes,I am not thinking much about it. Hard work and being focused is the key to success.
Gurinder has been training at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium,Chandigarh, under former Himachal Pradesh Ranji Trophy cricketer and now a coach,Harish Sharma, for the last one decade. Gurinder has been a fabulous cricketer at u-19 and u-22 levels for Punjab.
Speaking on what Gurinder needs to do in order to cement his place in the Punjab senior teams and deliver the goods, coach Harish Sharma said,Gurinder is an exceptional talent. His cricket abilities can help whichever team he plays for. At this point of time,he has made a mark at the under-19 and under-22 levels,in addition to his selection in the Punjab T-20 and ODI teams. He just needs to be more mature and capitalise on the opportunities he gets. He has been working hard on his fitness and game in the recent years. What separates him from others at this age is his agility and presence of mind during the matches. He is a thinking bowler, who adjust well to the match situations and also delivers accordingly. He is a match-winner. With his economical bowling and some 40-50 runs down the batting order,Gurinder can be an asset to a team. This season should be crucial for him. He needs to take initiative and shine in the inter-district and other tournaments.
Gurinder attended a specialists camp last month at the PCA Stadium under coaches Munish Bali and Arun Bedi. The camp turned out to be quite useful for me. It is always nice to train with such coaches and learn during the off-season. I just wish and hope the hard work pays off and I can make a mark for Punjab in the coming seasons, shared Gurinder who has attended dozens of camps at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore in the recent years.
