With the parties in the opposition talking about the Rail bribery scam during their election campaigns in the city, a section of the leaders of the Chandigarh unit of Congress have expressed apprehension about the issue creating a negative impact on the elections.

The issue has been highlighted during the recent visits of leaders from different parties in Chandigarh on several occasions. In the Rail bribery scam, the nephew of MP Pawan Bansal was arrested by the CBI for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 90 lakh. When the issue came to light in May last year, it had led to much protest in the city.

Former BJP President Nitin Gadkari during his visit to Chandigarh to address a meeting of party workers here raked up the issue once again. Even in the rally by the Aam Aadmi Party in the city, the leaders who addressed the gathering talked about the issue.

A senior leader of the party stated that at this point, it is being felt that the party should consider alternate options apart from Bansal.

“The conditions in the country are such that people want change. We believe in the honesty of Pawan Bansal. However, the issue would give an opportunity to the opposition to indulge in a negative campaign. This would impact the prospects of the Congress in the elections,” a senior leader said.

A similar view is enunciated by H S Lucky, who is leading the tirade against Bansal. He says that since the MP has served the city for several years, a newer face should now be given the chance.
